Norman Storlie

NormanStorlie_rgbNorman Herbert Storlie, age 95, of Spring Grove, Minnesota, passed away Wednesday, October 22, 2014, at Tweeten Lutheran Healthcare in Spring Grove.

Norman was born in Black Hammer, Minnesota, on April 16, 1919 to Alfred and Lena (Lien) Storlie. He was one of 11 brothers and sisters. He attended school at the Rauk School, District 69, which was just down the road from their farm and was close enough to the farm that they could go home for their noon meal. The family made and sold sorghum and the family also operated a saw mill, which was created by using a Packard car engine and various other parts.

On February 1, 1942, Norman was drafted and entered the Army and was assigned to the Army Air Corps. He worked as a member of the ground crew on B-25s and A-20 medium bombers; he later became crew chief. He boarded the USAT Mariposa (a luxury line fitted for troop transport) at Angel Island in San Francisco Bay and arrived in Melbourne, Australia. From there, Norman traveled to New Guinea, the Philippines and ended up in Okinawa as the war ended. Norman returned home as a staff sargeant.

After returning home, he helped his family build the large barn on the family farm.

In 1951, Norman married Alma Burmester and shortly after, they built their house on 3rd St. N.E. in Spring Grove, where they lived with their children, Carol, Craig and Diane.

Norman worked with Clarence Bjorlo and co-owned a furniture and flooring store with him in Spring Grove. Norman installed tile and linoleum flooring and Clarence installed carpet. Norman was an extremely creative carpenter and an artist with wood. He built barns, houses, did remodeling, added additions, turned an old barn into a house and fixed, repaired and turned something old into something new. His basement was his workshop and after a full day of work, it was common for him to be ‘putzing’ or working in the basement on another project.

Norman was helpful and generous; he served on church boards, American Legion Post #249 and Sons of Norway and was a member of many other community organizations for years.

Norman enjoyed dancing, trail rides, fishing (for which he built his own boat), gardening, auction sales, lefse making and traveling with his wife, Alma.

In June of 2009, Norman participated in one of the Freedom Honor Flights. This is a one day flight from La Crosse to Washington, D.C. for 160 WWII Veterans to see the WWII Memorial and other sites.

In the past few years, Norman was interviewed by Giants of the Earth about his military memories. One of the interviews includes his son, Craig, and adds many stories about his WWII travels.

In October of 2010, Alma preceded Norman in death. In the fall of 2012, Norman moved to Spring Grove Assisted Living and in January of 2014, after some health issues, to Tweeten Lutheran Health Care.

An all around good, kind and generous soul, Norman will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Survivors include his children, Carol (Gerald) Geving, Mabel, Minnesota; Craig (Jill) Knueppel,  Atlanta, Georgia; and Diane (David) Lorenz, Elk River, Minnesota; five grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; his sister, Doris Folkert, Plainview, Minnesota; and two special four legged friends, Benson and Murphy.

In addition to his wife Alma, he was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Kristin Louise Lorenz, and many of his siblings.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Spring Grove. Pastor Stephanie Frey will officiate. Burial will be in the Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery. Friends may call Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Roble Funeral Home in Spring Grove and one hour prior to services at the church on Sat.

McElhineyIvan_webIvan Gerard McElhiney, age 82, passed away on December 2, 2014 at his home in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

Ivan was born on May 28, 1932, in Covington, Kentucky, to Ivan Roger and Lucy (Spitz) McElhiney. He attended elementary school in Wadsworth, Ohio and high school in Nashville, Tennessee. While in his elementary school years during WWII, Ivan worked hoeing people’s victory gardens, setting pins in a bowling alley and washing dishes in a restaurant. In high school, Ivan worked part time as an oven operator’s helper at a Holsum Bakery and as a sausage maker’s helper at a local slaughter house.

Upon completion of high school in 1950, Ivan enlisted in the U.S. Navy for a period of fouryears. After being discharged, he worked as an apprentice construction electrician but left this job after two years to return to Naval Service because, as he put it, he was homesick for his shipmates.

During this second enlistment, Ivan met his future wife, Lois Jean Evans. They were married on September 26, 1959, at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in rural La Crescent, Minnesota. They have two sons, Sheldon C. (Teresa), La Crescent; and Quintin L. (Christine), La Crosse, Wisconsin.

In all, Ivan served 21 years in the Navy, 14 years of this in the submarine force, four years in the amphibious force and three years on the staff of the Commander in Chief of the Atlantic Fleet. He had risen to the rank of Lieutenant Commander at the time of his retirement in 1972.

After he retired from the Navy, Ivan tried his hand as an insurance salesman, communications systems technician, handyman and hobby farmer. In 1979, Ivan suffered a serious heart attack and gave up strenuous labor to become a house husband. Over the next few years, his creative talents flourished as a cake decorator, stained glass artist, painter and Master Gardener.

As a member of South Ridge United Methodist Church, Ivan served his church on the administrative council for quite a few years, sometimes as chairman, secretary or treasurer. He also led an adult bible study program and became a certified lay speaker, filling in for pastors at other churches and nursing homes when needed. He was a life member of the United States Submarine Veterans and served as Chaplain of the 125 member Minneapolis/Saint Paul base.  Additionally, he served as treasurer for Mound Prairie Township in Houston County, Minnesota.

In recent years, Ivan became interested in the art of telling oral stories. He was a member of the Bluff Country Tale Spinners and volunteered as a story teller to both children and adults while they received chemotherapy at Gundersen Clinic and to children admitted as patients at Lutheran Hospital. He also served on the planning committee of the La Crosse Story Fest held in Myrick Park every year.

Ivan was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Ann Payne and one niece.

He is survived by his wife; his two sons and four grandchildren,  Allison, Amanda, Quintin II, and McKaela; two sisters, Patricia O’Boyle and Margaret Rice (Jim Starrett); brother, Jim (Judy); and 14 nieces and nephews.

Funeral service for Ivan will take place at South Ridge United Methodist Church, La Crescent,  on Saturday, December 6 at 11 a.m., Pastor Mark Bengtson officiating.

Visitation will be at the Hoff Funeral and Cremation Service in Houston, Minnesota on Friday, December 5, from 4 to 7 p.m. and for one hour prior to the service at church. Interment will be in the McElhiney Family Cemetery in Tennessee City, Tennessee.

Special thanks to Dr. Thomas Retzinger (Winona); Jayne Laylan APNP (La Crosse); the Gundersen Health System physicians, nurses, and staff; and the Gundersen Hospice team.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Gundersen Pediatrics Hematology/Oncology Clinic for use in purchasing gas cards to offset the cost of travel for the parents and caregivers of the children being treated there.
