Edward H. Bissen, 92, of St. Paul, Minnesota, and formerly of Brownsville, Minnesota, passed away May 11, 2015 at the Good Samaritan Ambassador Nursing Home in New Hope, Minnesota.
He was born November 2, 1922 in La Crosse, Wisconsin to Mike and Irma (Harer) Bissen. Ed was raised in Brownsville, and after graduating from Caledonia High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1941. He served in the Panama Canal Zone, the Mediterranean, Japan, Korea, China, Vietnam, and Brooklyn, New York, through wars and peace, for nearly 30 years. He retired in 1970 as Chief Warrant Officer 4, and then worked for the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency for 12 years.
Ed is survived by his wife of 37 years, Harriet; his sons, Daniel and Michael; his daughter, Denise Swift; step-daughters Susan (Charles) Didier and Penny McCarran (Robert Burleson); sister, Margie Rohrer; sister-in-law, Dolly Bissen; nieces, Judy Lange, Nancy Davis, Regina Johnson, Bonnie (James) Ludlow, Terry Bissen and Charlene Dahlberg; nephews, Mike Rohrer and Jeff Rohrer; and many cousins and friends.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Paul and Charles Bissen.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 6 at Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Home, 518 W. Main St., Caledonia. Burial will follow in the Veteran’s Cemetery, Brownsville, with military honors by the LeRoy D. Holzwarth VFW Post 6801 and the United States Navy Funeral Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the time of service Saturday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to the LeRoy D.
